Does PRK surgery cause dry eyes?
Corneal refractive surgery is a recognized risk factor for developing dry eye. Dysfunction in the ocular surface-lacrimal gland functional unit contributes to the occurrence of dry eye following photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK).
How common is dry eyes after PRK?
The incidence of dry eye following PRK was 5% and following LASIK was 0.8%. There are two important findings in this study. One is that at 1 year following LASIK, the incidence of dry eye was very low. With the return of corneal sensation, dry eye resolves in most cases.
