For maximum sea lion activity, winter is the best time to visit Sea Lion Caves. As breeding season approached in spring, the sea lions leave the cave and remain in rookeries and outdoor haul out areas along the Coast until stormy weather in fall has them seek shelter within the cave.

There is no specific time of day or time period when the sea lions are not in the cave. Just to clarify, the sea lions do not generally leave the cave in the daytime and then return at night. Every day, and sometimes even every hour, is different inside the cave depending on tide, weather, time of year and the special occupants.
