What’s a genital culture?
A genital culture allows the organisms present in the vagina to grow to levels enabling identification. The vagina is not sterile, but contains a mixture of aerobic, anaerobic, coliform, and skin bacteria, as well as a few fungi. Normally, these are in balance with no particular predominant organism.

When do you do a vaginal culture?
Your doctor might order an endocervical culture if: the quantity of your vaginal discharge has significantly increased or decreased. the discharge has changed in color or consistency. the discharge has an unpleasant odor.
What do doctors test for in vaginal swab?
Swabs are usually taken from the inside of your vagina and cervix. These are sent to a laboratory to look for signs of a bacterial infection and identify the bacteria responsible. A positive test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea or mycoplasma genitalium supports the diagnosis of PID.
What causes BV infection?
BV is a result of an imbalance of “good” and “harmful” bacteria in a vagina. Douching, not using condoms, and having new or multiple sex partners can upset the normal balance of vaginal bacteria, increasing your risk for getting BV. We also do not know how sex causes BV.

How do you get a vaginal culture?
During a vaginal examination, the health care provider uses a swab to take samples of mucus and cells from the endocervix. This is the area around the opening of the uterus. The samples are sent to a lab. There, they are placed in a special dish (culture).

Why do doctors finger you?
This checks the muscles between your vagina and your anus. This also checks for tumors behind your uterus, on the lower wall of your vagina, or in your rectum. Some doctors put another finger in your vagina while they do this. This lets them examine the tissue in between more thoroughly.
Is BV caused by poor hygiene?
Answer: The cause of BV is not poor hygiene. Excessive vaginal cleansing can be a contributing factor for the cause of BV, by disturbing the balance of the bacteria in the vagina. Also, avoid using bath oils, detergents and bubble bath. If you smoke, this can be an additional contributing factor.
