If a car is making a fluttering noise when venting at high rpm and boost, then the BOV isn’t doing its job. Contrary to popular belief the noise is actually emitted from the turbo, not the BOV itself.

Once a certain level of pressure is reached, the inlet air opens a spring, allowing for the intake air downstream of the turbocharger to either vent to the atmosphere or be redirected back into the turbo.

A wastegate controls the boost pressure by bleeding boost above a set threshold to prevent damage to either the engine or the turbocharger. A blow of valve vents leftover boost when the engine speed drops, to prevent back pressure into the turbo which can potentially cause catastrophic failure.

How do I make my BOV flutter?
If you want your BOV to flutter a bit, try increasing the spring preload by turning the adjustment clockwise. It’s perfectly safe to set your BOV up to cause some low-rpm flutter, as long as it vents with a whoosh at high-rpm and boost.
Do you need a tune for blow-off valve?
