William Hewlett Net Worth $9 Billion

William Hewlett was an engineer and the co-founder of the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP), with David Packard. He was born in May 20, 1913 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His father was a professor at the University of Michigan’s Medical School, but he and his family had to move to San Francisco after he took a similar job at Stanford’s Medical School. He attended Lowell High School and was later accepted at Stanford University, were he received his Bachelor's degree in 1934.

He studied a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from MIT (1936), and a degree of Electrical Engineer from Stanford (1939). While attending undergraduate classes at Stanford, he became acquainted with David Packard. They started planning the formation of a company (1937), founded Hewlett-Packard Company and formed the famous partnership in 1939. The company was incorporated in 1947 and tendered an initial public offering in 1957. Hewlett and Packard created a new type of corporate culture, known as the HP Way, which claimed to be not be centered on making money, but instead, in respecting and nurturing employees. He was president of HP (1964-1977), and was also CEO (1968-1978), but he was later substituted by John A. Young, even though remaining active in the company as chairman of the executive committee (1983), and vice chairman of the board (1987). As a curious fact, when Steve Jobs was 12 years old, he called Hewlett asking for a component for a frequency counter he was building, and William was so impressed with Jobs' initiative that he offered him a job during the summer. Jobs thought highly of HP. In fact, it was one of the companies that he admired most.

Another curious fact about one of the first Tech Moguls in the Silicon Valley: Forbes listed him as one of the wealthiest Americans. The magazine ranked him in the No. 26 spot of their famous list in 2000, when he had an estimated net worth of $9 billion. But, he died a year later (January 12, 2001), leaving a huge legacy to all the technology entrepreneurs that followed him.
