Born in Clinton, Oklahoma, Keith grew up amid humble surroundings. He moved with his family to Moore, Oklahoma when he was a child and spent his summers with his grandparents. While he was at his grandparents, he was introduced to music through his grandmother's supper club. He earned money by doing odd hobs and occasionally played with the band. At the age of eight, he started to play guitar. After graduating from Moore High School, he worked in the oil fields. Finally, he started the Easy money Band with some friends and started to play in local bars.

After the oil industry started to decline, Toby Kieth switched to playing semi-professional football. In 1983, the Easy Money band began to tour the honky tonk circuit. By 1993, Toby Kieth released his first studio album. Although it was well-received, it was not the album that made him famous. His song, “How Do You Like Me Now?” with Nashville Dreamworks was the first number one hit that he achieved. All of his next three albums contained number one hits. Once his record label closed, he switched to Show Dog Nashville for his next seven studio albums.
