Syed Abul Hossain is a prominent Bangladeshi businessman and politician. He is a member of the Awami League, and serves as the International Affairs Secretary of the party. Since 1991, he has been a member of the Parliament of Bangladeshi, having been elected in 4 successive general elections (in 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2009). Hossain served as a State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives in the former government. He currently serves as the Communication Minister of Bangladesh.
Hossain attended the University of Dhaka, where he obtained his BA in Management in 1972. Soon after graduating, he joined Government Service and after sometime, he ventured into business. In 1975, he established SAHCO International Limited, which soon became a globally recognized business entity. The firm acted as an Ambassador and sponsored Bangladesh as an attractive destination for all Asian corporations.
Hossain was also a founding member of Boao Forum for Asia. Through his networking and business ventures, he has been able to represent the interests of his country to the highest Chinese authorities. Today, Hossain is one of the wealthiest people in Bangladesh, and he has an estimated net worth of $1 billion. He is married to Khwaja Nargis Hossain, who is the acting Director of Mutual Trust Bank Ltd and SAHCO International Ltd. Together, they have two daughters namely Syeda Rubaiyat and Syeda Iffat Hossain.
