Ranked as the 464th richest individual by Forbes in 2012, Spiro Latsis is Greece’s richest individual. He is the son of the late shipping magnate John Latsis. His family’s largest asset is the EFG Bank European Financial group based in Luxemburg. This is a banking conglomerate with offices in several places around the world.
Spiro manages the Latsis family fortune with interests in petroleum through a 30 % stake in Hellenic petroleum in Southern Europe and ownership of Pan European Oil and Industrial holdings S.A. The family has also delved into The Real Estate sector through their control of Lamda Development group based in Athens.
He also owns The PrivatAir jet charter service that has a fleet of 50 planes that cater to up market European and American travellers. In 2004, he started PrivatSea based on the same concept of PrivatAir. It is an exclusive yacht club consisting of the world’s most spectacular superyachts such as The Alexander, which is one of the world’s largest private yachts.
He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from The London School of Economics as well as an honorary doctorate from Witten/Herdecke University in Witten Germany. The economic slump in Greece affected his fortune greatly. He currently has an estimated net worth of $3.3 billion.
