Born in 1949 in Ghana, he has over the years racked up a number of academic qualifications including an Associateship in Mining Engineering, an M.Sc. in Mine Management as well as a D.Sc. from The United Kingdom. He was able to transform Ashanti Goldfields Corporation into a multinational with a listing in The New York Stock Exchange when he took the reins as CEO in 1986.
