Ronald “Ron” Southern is a Canadian Businessman and self-made billionaire. He is the Chairman and the majority stakeholder of ATCO Ltd, a Calgary-based power and utility company that he co-founded alongside his father in 1947. He has assumed the role of Chairman of the company since 2007. On January 2000, he passed the title of CEO to his daughter, Nancy Southern. Today, Ronald Southern is one of the most financially successful people in Canada, and he has an estimated net worth of $2.0 billion.

Southern is also the founder of the Spruce Meadow Equestrian Center, which was built in 1976 purposely for his two daughters, Nancy Southern and Linda Southern. Linda is the current Chief Executive Officer and President of Spruce Meadows, while Southern and his wife, Margaret Southern, serve as co-chairs. Besides being on the leadership level in the two companies (ATCO Ltd and Spruce Meadow), Southern also serves as a Director of various corporations including Southam Inc., Canadian Airlines, Royal & SunAlliance and Lafarge among others.
Southern’s entrepreneurship spirit has earned him a number of honors and awards, including the International Entrepreneur Award that was presented by the University of Manitoba in 1990. In the same year, he was inducted as a Member of the Order of the British Empire. In 1995, Southern was promoted to the level of Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1996, he was inducted as a Member of the Order of Canada.
