Politicians, lawyers, arms magnates and physicians dominate the list of the most affluent in the West African nation of Ghana. Some prefer to be tight-lipped about their wealth, while some have no qualms letting the public know that they belong to the moneyed lot.

Former Defense Minister Kwame Addo-Kufour is not in Forbes’ list of the richest people in Africa. It has been reported that he likes to keep his wealth under wraps and had succeeded in doing so until reports surfaced that Addo-Kufour is in fact Ghana’s richest man. Describing himself as a Christian doctor, and a very successful one at that, he is the brother of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Dr. Sam Jonah is the second richest man in Ghana with an estimated net worth of $600 million. He is executive chairman of Jonah Capital which invests in real estate, mining, agriculture, oil and gas, and finance. He is president of mining giant AngloGold Ashanti.
Kwesi Nduom is a politician and investor with a PhD in Service Delivery Systems. He is the former Minister of Public Sector Reform. He owns several businesses in Ghana such as Gold Coast Investments Ltd., Coconut Grove Hotels, and the First National Bank (FNB).
Lawyer and politician Nana Akufo-Addo ran for President of Ghana in the 2008 and 2012 elections under the New Patriotic Party. He lost but won the respect of many for his courage and grace. He was a three-time Member of Parliament for the Abuakwa South constituency between 1996 and 2004.
Former Finance Minister Yaw Osafo-Marfo was a trained engineer and project analyst. He is credited with restructuring the Bank for Housing and Construction and the National Investment Bank. He is currently a consultant for the World Bank.
Dr. Kwesi holds an LLB from University of Ghana and a PhD from the University of Michigan’s Law School. He has taught law at universities in Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia. Dr. Kwesi has also served as Minister of Finance and Director of Africa Research and Programmes at the Center of International Development at Harvard. He is estimated to be worth around $ 200 million.

President Rawlings, now retired, comes in at number 9. He is currently a UN envoy to Somalia. Before ascending into presidency, Jerry Rawlings was a fighter pilot. The 64 year-old devout Catholic is estimated to be worth $50 million.
Mr. Wayo is the son of a cocoa farmer. He made his money selling arms as a licensed dealer. Mr. Wayo currently has interests in oil in addition to dealing guns. He is estimated to be worth over $30 million.
