Boasting of a net worth of $2.85 billion, Richard Chandler was previously the chief executive officer of the Sovereign Group. With his brother, Chandler created a conglomerate that spanned industries like telecommunications, oil refining and electric utilities. Although the brothers are native to New Zealand, their growing business quickly expanded to Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. By 2007, the two brothers separated and Richard Chandler created Orient Global.

This new fund sought to work on investing in emerging market places and alleviating economically disadvantaged areas. By 2010, Chandler changed the name of Orient Global to the Chandler Corporation. In addition to his work with the Chandler Corporation, Richard Chandler began working on different social and educational programs. An education initiative worth $100 million was launched in India in 2007. Through this initiative, Chandler sought to improve educational opportunities for low-income students in the area.
He created the Freedom to Create Prize to help reward individuals around the world who strove toward social justice. More recently, news reports have indicated a potential investment by Chandler in Tasmania's Gunns logging company or Vietnam's Hoan My Medical Corporation. Ultimately, he went through with the investment in Vietnam and bought an 80 percent stake in the private hospital corporation.
