In 1996, PSY left for the USA to pursue a degree in business administration at Boston University. He lost interest in his studies and instead, spent his tuition fees on entertainment equipment and musical instruments.

He later decided to follow up with his passion by pursuing a degree at the Berklee College of Music. He attended lessons in music synthesis and contemporary writing, but he later dropped out. He returned to Korea to pursue his career in music.

PSY released his debut album PSY from Psycho world, which was a commercial flop after it was fined by the South Korean government for having inappropriate content.

His subsequent album received the same fate thanks to PSY’s unconventional demeanor. PSY’s second and third albums were successful which saw him receive accolades and awards. He released his fifth album PsyFive, which was banned from under 19 audiences for its “obscene lyrics” Despite receiving several bans Psy still managed to top the Korean music charts.

PSY rose to international fame after he released the video of the song “Gangnam Style” in 2012. The song became a viral hit thanks to its catchy tune and ridiculously funny video. With over 1.9 Billion views, it became the most viewed YouTube video of all times.

David Cameron has confessed to dancing to “Gangnam Style” a time or two, and you wouldn’t guess who else has admitted to having a strong liking for the song - Barrack Obama! No, not the Barrack Obama in YouTube parody videos. The President of USA admitted he does PSY’s infamous dance in the White House.

How big can one single get?  The fame of his song has earned him his first certificate ever, literally. He received a certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most liked YouTube video. PSY released his 19th single in 2013 dubbed “Gentleman.”

It has been viewed over 1.5 billion times on YouTube and has already broken the record for the most viewed video for its first 24 hours. Psy has also dabbled as an actor and has featured in the Korean film Wet dreams.
