Philip Niarchos is the eldest son of the late Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos. His mother, Eugenia Livanos, happened to be the daughter of his father’s rival Stavros G. Livanos. Together with his brother, Spyros, Niarchos is the Co-president and part of the board of directors at The Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
He is also an international council member for London’s Tate Gallery and a member of the Board of Trustees at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Phillip inherited his late father’s art collection. An avid fan of art, Phillip has added to his father’s impressive collection consisting of some of the most important pieces to fall into private hands such as Pablo Picasso’s self-portrait bought in 1989 for an approximate $50 million.
Among the additions to the collection is Andy Warhol’s Red Marylin and he is said to be the anonymous individual who purchased Vincent Van Gogh’s self-portrait in 1998 for $71.5 million. His love of art led him to commission Andy Warhol to paint his skull from his CAT scans. A family man of four children and husband to Victoria Christina Guinness of the famous Guinness family, he is worth $2.6 billion.
