Penny Pritzker is her name, and she deserves every penny that’s under her name. According to Forbes, her estimated net worth is $2.3 billion, which ranks her as the 266th richest person in the United States and the 764th richest in the world. She is among the eleven members of the Pritzker family, including Karen Pritzker, Antony Pritzker, Robert Pritzker, John Pritzker, Thomas Pritzker, Daniel Pritzker, Jean Pritzker, Nicholas Pritzker and James Pritzker, who are all on the Forbes billionaire list.
Penny is not only renowned for being a Hyatt hotel heiress, but she is also known for her untiring enthusiasm for a wide range of civil causes. In June 2013, Penny was sworn in as the 38th U.S. Commerce Secretary. She is the founder of Pritzker Reality Group and PSP Capital Partners, and the co-founder of Artemis Real Estate Partners. In 2009, Penny was ranked as one of the “100 Most Powerful Women in the World” by Forbes. In 2012, she was named as one of the “100 most powerful Chicagoans.
As for her background, Penny was born in 1959 in Chicago to the late Donald N. Pritzker, one of the Hyatt hotels’ founders, and Sue Pritzker. In 1981, she earned herself an A.B in Economics from Harvard College. In 1984, she earned an M.B.A and a JD from Stanford University. From 1991 to 1994, she served as the Chairperson of Superior Bank. In 1998, she was one of the co-founders of The Parking Spot, a company that is considered to be among the fastest growing companies in off-site airport parking management.
From 2005 to 2012, Penny served as the Non-Executive Chair of the Board of TansUnion, LLC. In 2010, she was one of the co-founders of Artemis Real Estate Partners, which is a real estate investment management firm. In 2012, she established PSP Capital Partners. Billionaires Jay Robert Pritzker and Anthony Pritzker are her brothers.
As far as her government and political involvement is concerned, Penny is a member of the President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, and has also served on the President’s Economic Advisory Board. In 2008, she was the national finance chairperson of the President Obama’s presidential campaign, and was the national co-chair of Obama for America.
On 20th November, 2008, it was reported by CNN that Penny was President Obama’s top choice for Commerce Secretary. She however withdrew her name from considerations citing obligations for her family. The 54-year old billionaire is married to Bryan Traubert, with whom she has two children.
