He is the son to Dondinho, a prolific footballer who played for small Brazilian clubs. Pele came from an underprivileged home and worked as a servant in tea shops to alleviate his family’s status. He could not afford to buy a ball, but this did not deter Pele from developing a rudimentary talent for football. He resulted to using a stocking stuffed with newspapers as his football.
Pele played for amateur football teams before he was signed to Santos FC. Pele’s supreme football skills saw him become the top scorer of the league. Following his breathtaking debut in Santos, he was recruited in the Brazilian National team. He scored his first goal for Brazil at the age of 16, which propelled the team to a 2-1 win over Argentina.
In 1958, he became the youngest footballer to become a world cup winner after he netted two goals for Brazil, which led to a 5-2 win against Sweden. Pele soon became an unstoppable phenomenon winning three FIFA world Cups in 1958, 1962, and 1970 respectively. Pele decided to hang up his boots in 1977. His last match was a game between Santos and New York Cosmos.
His killer instincts, accurate strikes, and dazzling football skills saw him received a string of awards and accolades. In 1999, he was named World Player of the Century and in the same year, he was elected Football Player of the Century courtesy of the France Football magazine
