He founded Elliot Management Corporation, which is considered to be one of the oldest hedge funds under continuous management. The company was established in the year 1977, and Singer has served as its Chief Executive Officer since then.
Singer was born on 22nd August, 1944 in New York as one of the 3 three children of a Jewish family. He graduated from the University of Rochester, where he obtained a B.S in psychology. He also obtained a J.D. from Harvard Law School, after which he worked as a lawyer in the real estate division of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette investment bank.
In the year 1977, Singer used $1.3 million he got from various family members and friends to set Elliott Associates L.P. Over the years, the company has diversified, and in 2010 it was noted that the company had offered to acquire a computer software company known as Compuware. The 69-year old billionaire is also an avid philanthropist, who has contributed handsomely through the E. Singer Family Foundation.
Besides being actively involved in his businesses, Singer is also involved in various other endeavors. He serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. Singer is also a member of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulations, and also serves on Harvard Medical School’s Board of Fellows.
