Throughout his career, Orji Uzor Kalu has worked in many different career fields. From 1987 onward, he served as the chairman of Cooperative and Commerce Bank Limited. In addition, he was the founder of SLOK and the People's Democratic Party in Nigeria. From 1999 to 2007, he held the political position of Governor of Abia State. The majority of Kalu's wealth was earned while he was the chairman of SLOK Holding. When Kalu was young, he borrowed $35 from his mother in order to start trading palm oil. He quickly expanded his business and stepped into the furniture company. After selling furniture on a large scale, he set up a conglomerate known as SLOK Holding that would eventually contain diverse operations in the paper, furniture, publishing, airlines and banking industries. His increasing success allowed him to expand internationally into nations such as Ghana, South Korea, Botswana, the United States, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Liberia. Due to his success in business, Orji Uzor Kalu was given the National Merit Award by the president of Nigeria in 1986.
