Rolihlahla Mandela, born on July the 18th 1918 in Mvezo Transkei, went to primary school in Qunu. In the school, one of his teachers gave him the name Nelson according to the school custom that children had to have Christian names. Mandela studied for a BA degree at the University College of Fort Hare but could not complete because he was expelled after he joined a student protest. However, he later completed his BA at the University of South Africa.
His first job was as a mine security officer in 1941.He studied LLB in the University of Witwatersrand but he did not complete. He then started studying with The University of London but also did not complete. He finally obtained his law degree through the University of South Africa while still in prison in 1989.He was in prison for 27 years from 1962 due to his opposition to the country’s white minority government and apartheid policies. He was finally released in 1990.
Mandela became the first black president of South Africa from the year 1994 -1999. His net worth is $10 million and came from royalties from his book “Long walk to freedom”, a personal autobiography. He will be remembered for having promised to serve only one term as president which he did, he also had his salary slashed and out of what remained, one third was given to children’s charities in South Africa. He has received a Nobel peace prize for dismantling apartheid in 1993. He died on 5th December 2013.
