1. Alec and Jocelyn Wildenstein, $3.8 Billion
Alec Wildenstein's family was known for making billions by selling famous pieces of artwork. His family had worked in the art world for years. In their youth, Jocelyn Wildenstein married Alec. Known for her extensive plastic surgery procedures, Jocelyn also became famous due to the way she started divorce proceedings. One day, she walked in on her husband with his mistress that was just 19 years old. After discovering this betrayal, Jocelyn sought a divorce. After the procedure was over with, the judge awarded her $2.5 billion in an initial settlement as well as $100 million every year for the next 13 years.
2. Rupert and Anna Murdoch/Wendy Deng $1.7 Billion
After being married for 31 years, Rupert and Anna Murdoch decided to call it quits. They cited “irreconcilable differences” as their reason. The settlement resulted in a loss of $1.7 billion in 1999. Within 17 days, Rupert Murdoch married the lovely Wendy Deng. This was followed by 13 years of wedded bliss before the new marriage ended as well. Although the divorce proceedings are just beginning, it is shaping up to be another record breaking divorce.
3. Bernie and Slavica Ecclestone $1.2 Billion
Bernie Ecclestone is known for his work as the Chief Executive Officer of Formula One racing while Slavica worked as an Armani model. After 23 years of marriage, they sought a divorce in 2009. In addition to child custody disputes for their two children, the divorce also resulted in a $1.2 billion settlement.
4. Adnan and Soraya Khashoggi $874 Million
Although their divorce took place more than 30 years ago, it still tops the lists as one of the most expensive divorces of all times. Adnan Khashoggi earned an impressive net worth as an arms dealer. Native to Saudi Arabia, the couple divorced in 1974. In 1979, Soraya sued her ex-husband for a settlement valued at $874 million. If this number was adjusted for inflation, it would mean a $2 billion settlement today.
5. Steve and Elaine Wynn $740 Million
Head of Wynn Resorts, Steve Wynn earned his wealth by creating and managing a casino empire. He married Elaine Pascal in 1963. Although they divorced in 1986, they remarried in 1991. Their second divorce was completed in 2010. In the settlement, Elaine was given 11 million shares of the company's stocks which were worth $740 million.
6. Craig and Wendy McCaw $460 Million
Native to Seattle, Craig McCaw earned his money by starting McCaw Cellular. He sold the company to AT&T in the 1990s for over $11 billion. When the divorce occurred in 1998, Wendy McCaw walked away with $460 million.
7. Mel and Robyn Gibson $425 Million
Famed for his movies, Mel Gibson married Robyn Moore when he was still an unknown actor. They married in 1980, but divorced in 2011. After 31 years of marriage, the courts granted Robyn Gibson half of Mel's fortune. The settlement was set at a cool $425 million.
