Mikhail Prokhorov is a Russian tycoon with interests in Russian politics. He is also an investor whose interests fall in the banking, metals and sports sectors. According to Forbes Magazine, Prokhorov is the 10th richest person in Russia and the 69th richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $13 billion. Prokhorov was born on May 3, 1965 in Moscow, Russia. He attained a Bachelor of Arts/Science from the Moscow Finance Institute in 1989. Today, he is one of the wealthiest and most influential people in Russia.
At the age of 27 (in 1992), Prokhorov teamed up with Vladimir Potanin to manage Interros. In 1995 the two business partners managed to seize the ownership of Norilsk Nickel, one of the largest nickel and palladium mining and smelting companies in Russia. They acquired the shares of the company from its workers for a portion of their projected market value. In 2007, Prokhorov departed from the partnership and at the time his share of the company was worth $7.5 billion.
In 2011, Prokhorov made an announcement stating that he had intentions of joining the Right Cause political party. In June of the same year, he was elected to the leadership of the Right Cause Party Congress. Three months later, he decided to resign from the political party. In December 2011, he made an announcement stating that he was going to contest the presidential election against Vladimir Putin that was to take place the following year. He announced that he would seek to be voted in to the high office as an independent. In the March 4, 2012 presidential polling, Prokhorov garnered about 7.95% of the total votes casted. In June same year, he became the Civic Platform Party’s leader.
In the year 2006, Prokhorov was presented with the Order of Friendship award purposely for his remarkable involvement in the growth of the Russian economy. This award was presented to this self-made billionaire during the signing of an order for the granting of state honors by Vladimir Putin on August 2006. In the year 2011, Prokhorov was awarded with the French Legion of Honor. This award was presented to him at the French embassy in Moscow by Jean de Gliniasty, France’s ambassador to Moscow.
Mikhail Prokhorov is still a bachelor, and a very eligible one for that matter. Besides being so engrossed in politics and business, he is also a sports loving person. He has in the past financially supported football, hockey and basketball clubs in Moscow. He also serves as the president of Russian Biathlon Union. He also became the 1st non-North American team owner in the NBA.
