In the Forbes issue of The World Billionaires of 2013, Fridman is ranked the second richest Russian after Alisher Usmanov. Mikhail Fridman was born on April 21, 1964 in Lviv, Ukraine. In 1986, he graduated from Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, where he was studying Bachelor of Arts/Sciences. He is currently the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Alfa Group Consortium, which is among the largest private investment groups in Russia. He also serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of TNK-BP. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of ABH Holdings S.A.
It was in 1988 when Fridman began his career in financial services and trading. One year later, Fridman together with Alexei Kuzmichov and German Khan and several others established Alfa Group Consortium, a company in which he currently serves as the Chairman. This company is now among the largest privately-owned investment groups in Russia.
Today, Alfa Group Consortium controls Rosvodokanal Group, Alfa-Bank, A1 Group, AlfaStrakhovanie Group and Alfa Capital Management. The portfolio for Alfa Group includes stakes in TNK-BP, X5 Retail Group and various telecom companies i.e. Turkcell, MegaFon and VimpelCom Ltd.
In 2005, Fridman was appointed as the Russian Representative on the International Advisory Board of the Council of Foreign Relations. He maintains this position to date. In the same year (2005) he became a member of the Public Chamber of Russia, and is still a member to date. He has also been an active supporter of Jewish schemes, both in Russia and in Europe. Fridman is also among the founders of the Russian Jewish Congress (RJC), which was founded in 1996.
Fridman is also a member of various public facing bodies, including the National Council on Corporate Governance and the Board of Directors of Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. He is also an avid supporter of the ‘Big Book” which is a national literary award. This billionaire is also an active member of the Board of the Centre Support for Native Literature.
Fridman is currently divorced. He has two children with his ex-wife.
