Michael Moritz is an American investor, writer and philanthropist. He is a former member of the board of directors of Google, PayPal, ITA Software, eGroups, Plaxo, and Yahoo among others. He currently sits on the boards of various companies, including Green Dot Corporation, LinkedIn, Earth Networks, Sugar Inc., HealthCentral and Gamefly. According to Forbes, Moritz is the 220th wealthiest individual in the United States and the 609th richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $2.8 billion.
Moritz was born in 1954 in Cardiff, Wales. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Christ Church, Oxford. He obtained his Master of Business Administration degree in the year 1978 from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1986, he joined Sequoia, after working for Time as a reporter. He was the co-author of the book titled “Going Broke: The Chrysler Story”. Soon after leaving Time, Moritz co-established a technology newsletter and conference company known as Technologic Partners.
Moritz has also dedicated much of his time and money to philanthropic endeavors. On June 2008, he and his wife announced that they would make a donation of $50 million to Christ Church, Oxford, which was considered to be the largest single donation in the institution’s history. On July 2012, Moritz made a donation of £75m to Oxford University, while on February 2013 he donated a total of $5 million to the Music Advancement Program of the Juilliard School. Moritz and his wife have two children, and they reside in San Francisco, California.
