Marc Russell Benioff is an American entrepreneur and a self-made billionaire. He is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of salesforce.com, a cloud computing company that he founded on March 1999.
Benioff is also the originator of the phrase “Platform as a Service”, and has allowed customers to set up their own applications on his company’s architecture or its cloud. Forbes Magazine currently ranked him as the 166th richest person in the United States and the 483rd richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $3.12 billion (as of March 2014).
Benioff was born on 25th September, 1964 in San Francisco, California to a Jewish family. He finished his high school from Burlingame High School in 1982. He later joined the University of Southern California, where he earned a BS in business Administration.
Before he founded salesforce.com, Benioff had worked for 13 years at Oracle Corporation in several executive positions such as marketing, sales and product development. He was named Oracle Rookie of the year when he was 23 years old. He was promoted to the position of Vice President of the company three years later, making him the youngest person to hold the title.
Benioff is highly credited for turning the software industry upside down, using the internet to refurbish the designing and distribution of the software programs. In 2009, this self-made billionaire was named “Executive of the Year” by The San Francisco Business Times. In 2010, he was named one of the “Smartest 50 people in Tech”, as well as one of the “Top 50 People in Business” by Fortune.
From 2003 to 2005, he served as the Co-Chairman of the President’s information Technology Advisory Committee after he was appointed by the former U.S. President George W. Bush. Salesforce.com has also received a number of accolades, including a Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation award. Forbes has also ranked the company among America’s Best Companies.
Just like many other billionaires, Benioff is also an active philanthropist, who has contributed heftily to various charitable organizations. He was the pioneer of the 1/1/1 Integrated Philanthropic model, by which corporations donate 1% of employee hours, 1% of equity and 1% of profits back to the communities they serve.
In 2008, Benioff was awarded with the “Excellence in Corporate Philanthropy Award”. The 49-year old billionaire is married to Lynn Benioff, with whom he has two children. Benioff has his residence in San Francisco, CA.
