Lui is a Chinese born businessman. He is currently ranked 28th in Forbes List of the World’s Billionaires and is the 2nd richest man in Hong Kong and Asia. He rose from humble beginnings having been born in Guandong then moving with his family to Hong Kong at the age of five.
He then spent his early years hawking food on Hong Kong streets to support his family. However, he showed his business acumen when after the end of World War II he began to supply Hong Kong’s expanding construction industry with construction machinery abandoned by the Americans as they left Japan. He made a fortune.
Propelled by this success, at the age of 26, he founded the K. Wah Group, whose construction firm has left its mark on Hong Kong’s landscape. He is now the chairman of the K. Wah Group which is comprised of Galaxy Entertainment Group, Stanford Hotels International, K. Wah International Holdings and K. Wah Constructions Materials Limited.
His empire is diverse spanning the entertainment, hotels, construction and properties sectors both in China and internationally. He also owns the Galaxy Macau casino in Macau.
Lui’s wealth is not his only talking point; his philanthropy is commendable. He has a passion for improving the health and education levels of not just the Chinese but the world at large. Consequently, he financed the establishment of the Lui Che Woo Research Laboratory at the Stanford University in California.
In addition, he sits on the boards of numerous higher education institutions in Hong Kong and mainland China. He also contributed to the renovation of over 100 underprivileged schools in mainland China while also providing scholarships for exemplary students at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
