Leonardo Del Vecchio is a 78 year old Italian and the founder and Chairman of Luxottica, the world’s leading producer of an assortment of eyewear. With a net worth of $19.2 billion, he is currently the 2nd wealthiest person in Italy. Raised in an orphanage from the age of seven, Leonardo learnt the art of manufacturing eyeglasses from a very early age when he apprenticed in a factory that manufactured them.
He later set up Luxottica in 1961 and as its Chairman he has led it to become the main producer of luxury eyeglasses for virtually all leading fashion labels in the world including Versace and Armani. In fact, Luxottica got its big break in the 80’s when it signed a deal with Armani to produce fashionable eyewear for them.
Consequently, the company now boasts of more than 70,000 employees and over 6000 retail shops around the world. Del Vecchio has major shares in Assicurazioni Generali (an insurance firm) and Foncière des Régions (a real estate firm) in addition to being the proud owner of the Moneikos, a super yacht.
Aside from his business dealings, Del Vecchio and his family are also playing their part in making the world a better place; as such they established the Del Vecchio Family Foundation through which they have made generous contributions to various charitable causes including the American-Italian Cancer Foundation.
Leonardo has had three marriages all of which have ended in divorce. His first marriage resulted in three children: Claudio (the proprietor of Brooks Brothers in the United States and heir apparent of the Del Vecchio empire), Marisa and Paola. Leonardo Maria was born to Del Vecchio and his second wife while his youngest children Luca and Clemente were born to his third wife. Del Vecchio resides in Milan, Italy.
