Born on August 6, 1948, Lars Larsen grew up on a potato farm. As a youth, he apprenticed with a bedding store and tried to save his money. Once he had saved enough, he opened up his first bedding warehouse. His dream was to create a chain of bed linen outlets. By April 2, 1979, Larsen had saved enough money to begin his dream.
He purchased a warehouse and created the company that is now known as JYSK. This company has grown since it began in Aarhus, Jutland and now has furniture lines, mattresses, home furnishings and bedding. With the success of IKEA, JYSK was forced to expand internationally in order to compete.
The company currently has stores in more than 34 countries and is breaking into the Chinese market. To commemorate the 30 year anniversary of the business, Lars Larsen released a biography entitled “30 Years With JYSK”. This book was sent for free to every house in Denmark and was translated into eight languages.
After its premier, the biography became Denmark's top selling book. In addition to his work with the JYSK Group, Larsen is an owner of Bolia.com and the Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort. He has a net worth of $3.9 billion, which makes him the thrid richest person in Denmark. Larsen is also the 375th wealthiest person in the world according to Forbes Magazine.
