The largest bank in Canada is the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) having an asset base of more than $870 billion and thus being ranked as the 11th largest bank in the world in terms of market capitalization as at August, 2013. Founded in 1864 as the Merchant Bank in Halifax, RBC offers a broad spectrum of financial services including personal and commercial banking, capital markets and insurance. As such, the institution has provided employment to more than 80,000 people in 46 countries around the world and has a client base of more than 15 million persons throughout the world.
