Karl Albrecht, the German entrepreneur, is one of the richest men in the world with a net worth of $26.9 billion. He co-founded Aldi, a discount supermarket chain, along with his brother and it is worth mentioning here that he acquired a majority of his net worth from this business only. He is easily the wealthiest businessman in Germany and the 4th richest person in Europe. Aldi was initially a small grocery store which was owned and run by their mother. The two brothers took over and the first outlet was created in 1961.

Aldi is a very big supermarket chain that operates in as many as 9 countries. Presently it has more than 4500 stores including close to 1200 stores in the United States. In 1994 Karl detached himself from the daily operations of the store and placed himself as the Chairman of the board. In 2002 he left this position also and thus totally relinquished any control of his business. Sadly, the much renowned discount supermarket stores is not run by any of Karl’s family members.
Karl has been a reclusive man throughout his life, so very little information is available on the personal front. He is very secretive about his family life but Forbes magazine has reported that he is married and has 2 sons. None of his sons is employed by Aldi. His bother, Theo, has died and Karl lives in the same town as his brother, Essen.
