Born on April 16, 1947, Kareem Abdul-Jabber’s birth name was Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor, Jr. He changed his name later in life in recognition of his Muslim heritage and religion. He was initially born in New York. During his career, he won three different NCAA Championships. Due to this string of success, he was admitted into the National Collegiate Hall of Fame by 2007. 

Although he is currently retired, Kareem Abdul-Jabber played a total of 20 seasons with the NBA. He holds the record for being the MVP six times total and was an All-Star a total of 19 times. In addition, he was a part of six NBA championships. Two of these championships occurred while he was an assistant coach.

Before he started playing basketball with the NBA, Kareem played on a high school team in New York City. During high school, his team won 71 consecutive games. Following his high school career, he was drafted for a season with the Bucks and was the first overall pick that year. He ended up playing for six seasons. By 1971, he changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabber. 

In 1989, Abdul-Jabber officially retired from the NBA. At this time, he was the all-time leader in points scoured, field goals made and attempted and minutes played. Since then, he has managed to retain his position as to all-time leading scorer. He is also still ranked as the third all-time in blocks and rebounds.

By 2008, the NBA listed him as the greatest player in collegiate history. In addition to his work as an NBA player, he has developed a career as a coach, actor and author. In 2012, he began to serve as a cultural ambassador for the United States. From modest beginnings, Kareem Abdul-Jabber has managed to develop an impressive career and a net worth of $20 million.
