As a child, Mathis was raised as the fourth of seven children. When he was just a young child, his family relocated to San Francisco, California. Once his talent was recognized, his father purchased a second-hand piano for his son to practice on. His father began teaching Johnny Mathis how to play piano and perform routines. At the age of 13, he began taking voice lessons. To pay for them, he performed chores at his voice teacher's house. He was a part of his first band in high school and was a star athlete. Following high school, he went to San Francisco State University with the intention of becoming a teacher.

His early career began when he was discovered by the co-owner of the Black Hawk club. At the time, this club was home to top jazz artists like Billy Holiday and Miles Davis. The owner contacted a jazz producer at Columbia Records and told him to send a blank contract. His debut album was released in 1956 and featured jazz. In his second album, he switched to singing romantic ballads. He also appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and the Pat Boone Chevy Showroom.
