Templeton started his Wall Street career in 1937. In the course of his career that lasted 7 decades, he dazzled Wall Street, led investors into foreign markets, wrote books on both finance and spirituality, structured some of the most thriving mutual funds of his time and established charities. Along the way, Templeton became a billionaire and was listed as one of the wealthiest men in the world. In 2006, Sunday Times listed him as the 129th richest person in the world. In 1999, Money Magazine named him ‘arguably the greatest global stock picker of the century.

Templeton was also involved in various charities, donating more than $1 billion to charitable causes. He is known to be one of the most generous philanthropists in US history, considering that his philanthropic activities had been estimated to be more than $1 billion in total. As a philanthropist, he established various foundations and institutions, including the John Templeton Foundation, the Templeton Prize for Progress toward Research or Discoveries about Spiritual Realities, the Templeton Library and the Templeton College of the University of Oxford.

In 1964, Templeton gave up his US citizenship and took up dual naturalized British and Bahamian citizenship. By renouncing his US citizenship, it became possible for him to channel an extra $100 million toward philanthropy.  In 1937, Templeton married Judith Folk, with whom he had three children; John Jr., Anne and Christopher. Sadly, Judith was involved in a motorbike accident that cost her her life in February 1951. In 1958, Templeton married Irene Reynolds, who died in 1993.
