John Madden is an American self-made millionaire, whose accumulated wealth amounts to about $200 million. He is a former football player, who played in the National Football League (NFL), and was at one point the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in the American Football League and the NFL. His professional coaching career debuted in 1967, when he became the Oakland Raiders coach.
Madden was born on April 10, 1936 in Austin, Minnesota, United States. When Madden retired from his coaching career, he was not only a Super Bowl winning head coach, but he was also the youngest coach ever to accomplish 100 career regular season victories. This is a record that he gathered in only 10-full seasons of coaching at the age of forty two. He remains the only coach with the most number of wins in Oakland Raiders history.
His overall winning percentage including playoff games are ranked 2nd in the NFL’s history. As a head coach, Madden not only won a Super Bowl, but he never had a losing season as well. He officially resigned from his coaching career in 1978. In acknowledgment of his coaching career, Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
Soon after retiring from his coaching career, Madden immersed himself in the world of broadcasting in 1979. He became a color commentator on National Football League games for 4 major American television networks, including CBS Sports, Fox Sports, ABC Sports and NBC Sports. He officially retired from broadcasting on April 2009.
Besides being renowned for his participation in the NFL as a successful coach, Madden is also renowned for ‘Madden NFL’, the long running video game series he has endorsed and fronted for over two decades. He has also been an author and has written several books. He has also served as a commercial pitchman for a number of retailers and products. He has been married to Virginia Fields since December 1959. Together, they have two sons, Michael and Joseph.
