John Fisher is an American businessman and investor. He is the youngest son of Gap Inc. founders, Doris F. Fisher and Donald Fisher, and the only son in the family that doesn’t sit on the corporation’s board. Besides being the majority owner of Oakland Athletics, John Fisher also has stakes in Scotland’s Glasgow Celtic football club and Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes. According to Forbes, he is currently the 206th richest person in the United States and the 580th richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $2.8 billion (as of March 2014).
Fisher was born on 1st June, 1961 to a Jewish family. He has two elder brothers: William S. Fisher and Robert J. Fisher, who are also billionaires. John Fisher graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor’s degree in 1983. After graduating, he worked in the mailroom at the Republican National Committee. He also worked as a fund-raiser for the former U.S. President Ronald Reagan and then Vice-President, George W. Bush. He later earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the Stanford University.
After graduating, Fisher got employed at a real estate company that had a business affiliation with Gap. The business was unsuccessful, and Fisher eventually became the President of Pisces Inc, which is the Fisher’s family’s investment management company. He later on co-acquired a number of Fairmont hotels in San Francisco with Lewis Wolff. This joint venture facilitated his investment in the Oakland Athletics.
Besides being well known for his business acumen, Fisher is also renowned for his philanthropic efforts. He serves as the Chairman of the board of the KIPP Foundation (Knowledge is Power Foundation), which is mainly dedicated to training teachers for the KIPP public charter school network. The 52-year old billionaire is marred to Laura Meier Fisher, with whom he has 4 children. Fisher and Laura reside in San Francisco.
