John D Rockefeller Net Worth $340 billion (In today's terms)

John D Rockefeller is known as the founder of the Standard Oil Company (1870), which revolutionized the oil industry and established the structure of modern philanthropy. As kerosene and gasoline grew in demand, Rockefeller's wealth multiplied and he became the world's richest man and one of the richest person in history (and the first American worth more than a billion dollars) even though working hard for only 27 years.

His money was utilized to create the modern methodical approach of philanthropy. He was able to create foundations that had a major influence on education, medicine and scientific research, which were essential contributions for the eradication of yellow fever and hookworm. And the more money he made, the more generous he would become. Other philanthropic efforts went to Spelman College in Atlanta (African American women were educated), and important colleges such as Harvard Yale, Vassar, Columbia, among other educational institutions. Rockefeller’s General Education Board (1903) was founded with the mission of giving everybody equal opportunity in education.

He was also the founder of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research and the Rockefeller Sanitary Commission. Rockefeller also founded the University of Chicago and Rockefeller University. He was also devoted to the Northern Baptist religion and financed many faith-based institutions. Although having a net worth of $340 Billion, he believed in total abstinence from tobacco and alcohol throughout, and never drank or smoked in his life.
