Credited with creating the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip, Jim Davis can be said to be one of the most successful cartoonists in recent times. The pudgy orange cat and title character of his widely read comic Garfield has become an instantly recognizable cartoon character globally. He is also credited with comics such as Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, U.S Acres/Orson’s Farm and Mr. Potato Head.
He based the life of Garfield’s owner, Jon, on his own childhood where he grew up on a farm. Jon is also a cartoonists and share the same birthday. Davis studied art and business in college and later worked at an advertising agency. He then embarked on Tom Ryan’s comic Tumbleweeds and came up with the comic Gnorm Gnat that had a five year run in The Pendleton Times. His comic couldn’t be syndicated. The editors claimed nobody could relate to bugs.
His subsequent comic, Garfield, started syndication in 1978 and from then on, has grown exponentially. The comic has spawned merchandise, Emmy Award winning TV shows and two live action movies. Jim Davis is a recipient of several awards including an Indiana Journalism Award, an Emmy Award and an Elzie Segar Award. His pen and paper have given him a net worth of $790 million.
