How Rich Was This
Legendary Trader?

Jesse Livermore Net Worth $1.4 to $14 Billion (In today's money)

Jesse Lauriston Livermore was an American stock trader, who was well-known for making and losing a number of multi-million dollar fortunes and short selling at some point in the stock market crashes in 1907 and 1929. He was born on July 26, 1877 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and began his trading career at a tender age of 14. Livermore put his first actual money on the market by placing a bet at a bucket shop, which was a type of gambling business that accepted bets on stock prices.

By the age of 15, Livermore had already earned profits of more than $1,000 (which equates to about $23,500 today).  He continued betting and won too much money from the bucket shops, such that most of them banned him from betting. Livermore then relocated to New York City and decided to dedicate his energies towards trading in legal markets. This transformation led him into devising a new set of rules that would be helpful in trading the market. He left his fellow traders a working viewpoint for trading securities that emphasized on escalating the size of a person’s position as it goes in the correct direction and minimizing losses swiftly. Livermore first became famous in 1907 when he sold the market short as it crashed

At times, Livermore failed to follow his own set of rules austerely, which resulted in him losing his massive fortune of $100 million after the 1929 market crash. A dollar in 1929 was worth ten to a hundred times what it is worth today. Therefore, Livermore’s net worth would have amounted to between $1.4 and $14 billion if it were today, which is quite a remarkable accomplishment for a self-made stock and commodities trader who specifically traded with his own money, rather than other people’s money. Sadly, Livermore committed suicide on November 28, 1940. Untouchable trusts as well as cash assets at his death amounted to over $5 million. He left behind 2 sons, Paul and Jesse Jr.
