James Francis Cagney, Jr. was born in New York City on July 17, 1899. The actor from the days gone by was also very famous for his dance. He worked in theatres as well as on the silver screen. Posthumously in 1999, he was ranked among the 50 greatest American screen legends by the American Film Institute. He is among the few people who have had a postal stamp issued in their honor.
Born to a poor family, his father was a bar tender and he had been very sick in the earlier part of his childhood. He survived despite several ailments and went on to graduate from Stuyvesant High School in 1918. James then attended Columbia College but dropped out before completing his degree in art due to his father’s untimely demise. He broke out with the 1931 film The Public Enemy.
James then appeared in a number of films like Angels with Dirty Faces, White Heat, The Roaring Twenties, One, Two, Three, and Tribute to a Bad Man. He also won the Academy Award as the best actor for his role in Yankee Doodle Dandy and also won two other nominations for the same award in his career. In 1974, he was presented with the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He died on March 30, 1986 and his body rests at the Cemetery of the Gate of Heaven.
