Jack Cockwell is a 72-year old self-made millionaire, who serves as the Group Chairman of Brookfield Asset Management Inc. As Group Chairman, he represents the company as a director on the Board of Brookfield Office Properties Inc., and other subsidiaries. He also serves as the director of Astral Media Inc and Waterfront Toronto. He is also the governor of Ryerson University, as well as the Heritage Governor of the Royal Ontario museum. He previously served as a director of Brookfield since 1979.
Over the past 35 years, Cockwell has played a significant role in the development of many prestigious office properties, forest product mills in South and North America, base metal mines and hydroelectric power dams. He has also helped set up one of the largest industrial groups in Canada. Cockwell also participated in a sweeping consolidation of those operations into a modernized asset management company that is chiefly focused on power generation and real estate.
From 1991 to 2002, Cockwell served as the President and CEO of Brascan Corp. He also served as the Executive Vice-President of Edper Enterprises Ltd. From 2004 to 2009, he served as an independent director of Fraser Papers Inc. He also served as Director of Norcen Energy Resources Limited, among many other positions he has held.
