Gregorio Perez Companc (born Jorge Gregorio Bazan) is an Argentine billionaire who is the principal shareholder of Molinos Rio de la Plata. This is a food giant and a diversified maker of frozen vegetables, flour and pasta. He was born in 1934 in Buenos Aires and was later adopted by a local socialite known as Margarita Companc de Perez Acuna. Today, Gregorio is one of the wealthiest people not just in Argentina, but in the world as well.
The 89-year old billionaire has an estimated net worth of $1.5 billion, and was ranked as the richest person in Argentina in 2012 with his then net worth of $2.9 billion. Gregorio has derived much of his fortune from his involvement as the head of Petrolera Perez Companc, which is a family-based gas and oil company. The conglomerate was founded in 1946 by Gregorio’s adoptive father.
In 2002, he sold the company for $1 billion to Petrobas, which is a Brazilian energy company. Towards the end of 2009, he resigned from active involvement in the business and opted to give his entire 75 per cent stake in Molinos Rio de la Plata to his 7 children. He is married to Maria Del Carmen Sundblad Beccar, with whom he had 8 children: Catalina, Pablo, Cecilia, Pilar, Rosario, Luis, Jorge and Margarita. Their eldest daughter, Margarita, died in a car accident in the 1980s.
