Rarely do we come across a man whose fashion exploits wins the hearts of millions of fashionistas all over the world. Gianni Versace is the rare man who set the fashion world alight with his creativity and design. Before his life was taken by a murderer named Andrew Cunanan, the man had a net worth of $1.4 billion.
The Italian fashion designer founded the Gianni Versace S.P.A. His clothes were often worn with great pride by some of the most famous personalities that include the likes of Eric Clapton, Madonna, Elton John, Diana. The list is endless.
Gianni was fiercely outspoken and openly gay. Gianni and his partner Antonio D’Amico certainly sought happiness shopping in all the right places and were often the life of the party.
Gianni was raised in Reggio Calabria with his siblings, elder brother Santo and younger sister Donatella. He was inspired by his dressmaker mother, Francesca who ran a sewing workshop.
It was during that time when he developed an interest towards designing. The man was then hell bent on carving his name in the competitive fashion world. He moved to the fashion capital, Milan, aged 26 to reach his goals. The rest, as they say is history.
The fashion designer was openly gay and found his love interest in model, Antonio D’Amico in 1982. The relationship was a healthy one and their bond stood the test of time until Versace’s murder at the hands of Andrew Cunanan. Although Versace’s will was supposed to leave D’Amico a wealthy man, he couldn’t see most of the money due to interference and complications from Versace’s family.
Antonio didn’t feel sorry for himself. In fact, he currently runs his own fashion company. Upon Versace’s death, the person who benefitted the most was his niece, Allegra Versace. She inherited 50% of his fashion empire when she turned 18.
