At birth, French Montana was named Karim Kharbouch. He was born in Morocco on November 9, 1984. At the age of 13, he moved with his family to New york City and began to learn English. While he was there, he attended Lehman and Roosevelt High School. After living in New York City for two years, his father decided to return to Morocco while his mother was forced to go on welfare. To earn income for his family, he began to work and also tried to develop his music career. By 2002, French Montana and Cokeboy Los created some mix tapes named “Cocaine City”.
At this time, he used the name “Young French” for his musical work. He attracted fans by interviewing artists and rising stars for DVDs. Although this was only intended to create an audience for French, the DVDs ended up being extremely popular. From 2002 to 2010, he released a DVD once or twice a year.
