The almost 80 years old French businessman Francois Pinault has a net worth of $17.2 billion as per March 2013 estimates. In spite of being a high school dropout, he runs the retail company Kering very efficiently. He is also the owner of the holding company, Artemis S.A, which has investments in some of the most well known companies of the world like Chateau Latour, Christie’s Auction House, Samsonite Luggage and Converse Shoes. He also boasts of the world’s largest collection of exquisite contemporary arts.
He was ranked by one of the leading art magazines as the most powerful person in modern art. In 2006 he secured the ownership of Palazzo Grassi, located in Venice, to display his art collection. He has also managed to collect some fine examples of art by Damien Hirst. He was involved in a long legal battle with LVMH over the control of the luxury brand, Gucci.
