Daryl Katz is a Canadian businessman and a self-made billionaire. Forbes estimated his net worth to be $3.29 million U.S dollars as of March 2014. The famous publication also ranked him as the 10th richest person in Canada and the 483rd richest person in the United States.
Katz, who is a former lawyer, currently serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Katz Group of Companies, which is a leading drug store operator in Canada with more than 1,800 stores. The Katz group also owns and operates Rexall Direct, which is the first mail-order pharmacy in Canada. It is also one of the leading institutional pharmacy operations in the country.
Katz was born on 31st March, 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta. He graduated with an Arts degree from the University of Alberta in 1982 and law degree three years later. Soon after graduating, he worked at Shoctor, Mousseau and Starkman law firm. He later started practicing Corporate and Franchise law. In a joint venture with his father, Katz paid a total of $300,000 for the Canadian rights to the Medicine Shoppe drug store franchise, which entails more than 1,000 stores in the United States.
Katz’s first Medicine Shoppe store was started in 1992. In the same year, he established the Katz Group of Companies, the holding firm for the group and one of the leading drug operators in the country. During the 90’s, Katz bought up several distressed pharmacies and set up an empire that operates at least 1,800 drug stores in Canada.
This self-made billionaire has also made a number of bids to purchase the Edmonton Oilers franchise of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has gone to the extent of working to build a new stadium for the team worth $600 million. The 52-year old Canadian billionaire is married to Renee Gouin, with whom he has two children.
