Daniel Gilbert a self-made billionaire with a net worth of $3.7 billion. He is the co-founder of Quicken Loans, which he established alongside his brother and his friend. The company’s name was changed later when it was purchased by the corporation that founded Quicken and Turbo Tax, intuit, Inc. Gilbert currently serves as the Chairman of the mortgage company.
Gilbert was born on January 17, 1962, in Detroit, Michigan, to a Jewish family. He attended Michigan State University, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree upon graduation. He also obtained a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School. He earned his real estate agent’s license while still in college. While in law school, he worked at Century 21 Real Estate Agency that belonged to his family. In 1981, he was convicted of criminal gambling, but the conviction was removed in the long run.
In 1985, he saw a great financial breakthrough in the mortgages business. He started a small mortgage company by the name Rock Financial along with Lindsay Gross, Ron Berman and his younger brother, Gary Gilbert. The corporation turned out to be a success, and he later sold it to Intuit in 1999 for $532 million. He made a wise move purchasing it back 3 years later. Today, Quicken Loans is one of the largest online lenders in America, being hopeful of issuing loans worth $80 billion per year.
Gilbert is also the majority owner of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, the AFL's Cleveland Gladiators, NBA Development League's Canton Charge, as well as the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters. Gilbert is also a renowned philanthropist, who has contributed to various charitable organizations and has supported many causes. The 52-year old self-made billionaire is married to Jennifer Gilbert, with whom he has 5 children. Gilbert and his family reside in Franklin Michigan.
