The widow of John T. Walton, Christy Ruth Walton is well-known as the richest heiress of Wal-Mart.  Her husband, John T. Walton is Wal-Mart’s founder, Sam Walton's, son. After the death of John T. Walton, Christy Walton received his fortune amounting to US $15 billion thus making her the sixth wealthiest person in the US and the world’s richest woman in the same year. Her fortune has now grown to more than $30 Billion due the rise in Wal Mart's stock price.

In fact, in March 2012, Forbes Magazine reported that for seven years, she was the world’s richest woman until Gina Rinehart, Australia’s mining magnate, broke Christy’s record in 2012.

Christy Walton inherited a huge sum after becoming a widow in 2005, when she received her husband’s estate. Her late husband, John T. Walton who died from a tragic plane crash, was one of the sons of Sam Walton who founded the biggest retail shopping store in the United States – Wal-Mart. Aside from the large sum of money from her husband’s estate, the entire net worth of Christy Walton and her family amounted to US $29.9 billion thus making her as the sixth wealthiest person in the country. Aside from her late husband’s estate, most of her wealth is derived from her Wal-Mart shares as well as from a US-based company that manufactures solar panels, First Solar, to which her late husband invested in on 1999.

Between 2002 and 2006, she was able to give out a sum of US $3.5 million to charity. She is known to give donations to organizations that involve the arts and environment. She makes regular donations to Mingei International Museum and the San Diego Zoological Society.

In 2006, she also made it to the headlines when she donated to the International Community Foundation her 1896 Victorian home due to its historic significance. She also shouldered the total cost of restoration and preservation of the said building which amounted to US $4 million. It is considered as one of the most notable donations she ever made.
