Born in Dublin, Ireland, Bono's birth name was Paul David Hewson. Hew was born on May 10, 1960 and was the second son in the family. When he was just 16 years old, Bono created the band U2. During the band's early beginnings, it was known by the name, Feedback. By 1977, they switched the name to U2.  This band signed on with Island Records in 1980 and quickly became one of the most popular bands around the world. It released a total of 12 albums and constantly sold out concert venues. Altogether, he has won a total of 22 Grammy awards. The majority of the lyrics used by U2 were written by Bono and normally incorporate different social themes. 


In addition to his work as a musician, Bono created an investment firm called Elevation Partners. By 2009, the firm purchased a $90 million stake in Facebook that represented 1.5 percent of the company. As Facebook appreciated in value, the value of the stake rose to $600 million. Outside of his firm, Bono also invested in the renovation of the Clarence Hotel within Dublin. Outside of business, Bono has developed a reputation for being a leading social activist in the entertainment world. He has  performed at charity concerts like Live 8 and Band Aid.

These different concerts were intended to address debt relief for third-world nations. By 2002, Bono co-created, DATA . This acronym stands for Debt, AIDS, Trade and Africa. To further assist AIDS research and treatment in Africa, Bono developed Project Red. His noteworthy philanthropic work led to his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. In recognition for his work, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. On a personal level, Bono has been married to Alison Hewson since 1976. Together, Bono and Hewson have two sons and two daughters.
