Apart from establishing the company, Bill Bowerman was also a star track and field coach in his own right. During his lifetime, he coached 31 Olympic athletes, 51 All-Americans, 12 American record-holders, 24 NCAA champions and 16 sub-4 minute milers; talk about having an eye for talent. Bill Bowerman truly is an inspirational figure who has achieved more in his lifetime than anyone can dream of.

Bill Bowerman was born to an affluent family. His father served as the Governor of Oregon. During his childhood, Bill went through a major heartache when his twin brother Thomas died in an elevator accident. During his high school years, he participated in plenty of extracurricular activities. He played in the school band was also part of the state winning football team in his junior and senior years. Bill Bowerman graduated from the University of Oregon and married his high school sweetheart Barbara Young on June 22, 1936. He is survived by sons Jon, William J. Bowerman Jr and Thomas Bowerman.
When samples of Tiger brand running shoes were sent to Bill Bowerman by Phil Knight, the coach fell in love with the shoes and he forecasted its potential. So, he decided to invest in them. Thus, Blue Ribbon Sports was born. It would later be known as Nike.
