Melnichenko was born on March 8, 1972, in Belarus, Russia. In 1997, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts/Science from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics. He currently serves as the Chairman (Non Executive Director) of SUEK as of April 2015 according to the corporate website of SUEK. Mr Melnichenko also serves in the board of EuroChem as the Chairman of the Strategy Committee (Non-Executive Director) according to the corporate website of EuroChem. Melnichenko attained the billionaire status when he was under 40 years of age, and was once a member of the “under 40” billionaire’s club.
After graduating from university, Melnichenko established a chain of currency-exchange booths. In 1993, Melnichenko with several others established the MDM Bank. This bank grew and within 10 years of operation, it had become one of the largest private banks in Russia. Between 1993 and 1997, Melnichenko served as the Chairman of the Management Board of the bank. In 2001 he co-founded the MDM Group that comprised of industrial assets including EuroChem and Siberian Energy Company.
Melnichenko was also one of the co-founders of the largest manufacturer and exporter of steel pipes in Russia, the Pipe and Metallurgic Company. In 2007, he obtained a 7 percent stake in K + S, a German competitor based in Kassel that produces fertilizer. He later increased his stake in the company to about 15 percent. In 2013, he bought his ex-partners shares in SGC and SUEK and became the major shareholder. Since the year 2007, he has been a member of the Bureau of the Board of Directors of the RSPP (Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs).
Melnichenko is married with one child. His wife, Aleksandra Melnichenko, is a former Serbian pop singer and model. Their wedding took place in 2005 in South France, and famous celebrities in the likes of Julio Iglesias, Christina Aguilera and Whitney Houston were invited. In 2007, Jennifer Lopez was invited to perform at Aleksandra’s birthday party.
Melnichenko owns a Motor Yacht names “A” after his wife. He also owns a $12.2 million penthouse situated in Central Park West New York. The apartment has a roof terrace and is 2 floors high.
