Americo Amorim is a Portuguese businessman who has an estimated net worth of $5.7 billion. He is the richest person in Portugal and the brains behind the success of the cork manufacturing company, Corticeira Amorim. The company was founded by his grandfather in 1870 and Americo, single-handedly, turned the fortunes of this small cork-sized company. Today it is the largest producer of corks in the world today.
Americo Amorim is no longer the CEO of the company and is not involved in the daily operations of the company although he still owns 50% of the shares of the company. Moreover, he has major stakes in banks, energy companies and even real estate. His fortunes are now coming from his stakes in various companies such as Finpro (28%), Banco Popular (7%), Galp (18%) and BIC Angola Bank (25%).
In 2005, Amorim started a bank in Angola by collaborating with the daughter of the Angolan President, Isabel dos Santos. The bank was a huge success largely due to the $450 million loan that he made to the Angolan government. Americo also received an honorary PhD in 2009 from St John’s University. He is married to Maria Fernanda de Oliviera Ramos, daughter of a prominent Portuguese. They have 3 daughters.
